AS FILM FESTIVAL (AsFF) is the first international film and visual art festival managed by people with Asperger Syndrome. It was born as a follow-up of a wider program, started up by Not Equal Association in 2008, and based on the idea of using cinema as a tool for social inclusion. AsFF is unique because it is not a festival about autism, but a film festival made by people with autism. For this reason (this is our claim) “it is equal to the others festivals, but different”.

Terms and rules

Art. 1
Organization

a) ASFF is the first film festival managed by people with Asperger Syndrome. It was conceived by the Not Equal association.

b) The 2020’s edition of the ASFF will be held in Rome on November at MAXXI National Museum of the XXI Century Arts. In the following months, the festival will be on tour in some Italian cities (ASFF OnTheRoad).

Art. 2
Sections

ASFF 2020 includes:
a) PUNTI DI VISTA/POINTS OF VIEW, a competitive section with free topic: the idea is to promote the art of filmmaking as a means to analyze and better comprehend one’s own perception of reality and related social issues; a very personal view and interpretation of the world and the everyday life; the eye of the camera used as a metaphorical canvas to tell one’s own story. There are no restrictions when it comes to both style and genre in this competition, although widely relatable narratives are going to be preferred for a final selection. All shorts made in the last year (starting from January 2019) can participate to the festival. All the films must not be longer than 20 minutes.

b) REASONABLY DIFFERENT is a not competitive section of the festival specifically dedicated to filmmakers affected by autism and/or to those films willing to expand on the difficult themes related to all sorts of cognitive impediments such as, but not only, Asperger syndrome. There aren’t going to be any limitations imposed by length, genre or technique.

c) ANIMATION NOW! is a competitive section of the festival specifically dedicated to Animation. All shorts made in the last year (starting from January 2019) can participate to the festival. All the films must not be longer than 20 minutes.

d) ASFF SCHOOL is a competitive section of the festival specifically dedicated to short films in italian language suitable for children under 14 (G Rated). here are no restrictions when it comes to both style and genre in this competition, although widely relatable narratives are going to be preferred for a final selection. All shorts made in the last year (starting from January 2019) can participate to the festival. All the films must not be longer than 20 minutes.

a) PUNTI DI VISTA DOC, a competitive section dedicated to italian documentary. All shorts made in the last year (starting from January 2019) can participate to the festival. All the films must not be longer than 20 minutes.
Non-Italian speaking films submitted to ASFF must be subtitled at least in English. A subtitle file in a standard format (srt, sub, ass) is requested.

Every author is entitled to present no more than 3 films.

art. 3
Subscription

a) Submission is free for PUNTI DI VISTA, REASONABLY DIFFERENT and ANIMATION NOW! categories. Submission to POINTS OF VIEW categorie requires a fee.

b) the authors can register for the festival through FilmFreeway. Only Italians authors can register their works also using the registration form on www.asfilmfestival.org;

c) June 1 2020 is the deadline for sign up.

art. 4
Selection
The selection of competing works is handled by the festival’s Artistic Direction, of which judgment is undisputable. Authors of the selected works must make an effort to produce the necessary materials to promote themselves and their films (high quality video, pictures of the set, pictures of the director). Said materials will be used to print the ASFF’s official catalogue and day-to-day schedule, as well as publishing photographs and relevant news concerning the selected films and directors themselves. Again, it’s all for the sake of both the festival’s and the individual author’s promotion.
Authors authorize the organization of the festival to use clips (up to one minute) from their shorts for promotional reasons.

art. 5
Jury and Awards
The works competing for the PUNTI DI VISTA/POINTS OF VIEW and ANIMATION NOW! categories will be judged by a jury selected by the festival’s board and it will be composed by journalists, critics, directors and various field professionals. Among the selected works will be awarded:
ASFF 2019 BEST INTERNATIONAL SHORT,
ASFF 2019 ANIMATION NOW! AWARD,
ASFF 2019 BEST ITALIAN SHORT.

The works competing for the ASFF SCHOOL categorie will be judged by a jury composed by italian students and teachers. Among the selected works will be awarded:
ASFF SCHOOL 2019 AWARD:

The organization reserves the right to confer special prizes and mentions.

art 6
Your Works for Cultural and promotional Purposes

ASFF reserves the right to project some of the selected films, without commercial benefits, in the context of possible culturally and socially oriented activities aimed to promote the festival itself.

art 7
The Authors’ Responsibility

ASFF is not to be held responsible for any damages, losses, costs and related issues of any nature concerning the content of the selected films, its projection, publication and the possible non-abiding of the enlisted rules from the author’s part.
The subscription of a film, along with a sent copy, imply the full acceptance of said rules from the author’s part. In case of complications outside of the established regulations, the festival’s Artistic Direction (of which decisions are undisputable) will take charge of the problem. Eventual complaints will be redirected to the (Roma) Italian Tribunal House.
