Article 1
(On admissions)
The filmmaker must be a student enrolled into any course or grade of Higher Education (national or international) at the time of the making of the audiovisual production;
Short films up to 30 minutes of duration [DGI] (including credits) falling into the following categories (or others) will be accepted:
- Philosophical contemporary questions: migration, globalization, refugees, borders, identity
- Climate change
- Ethics and development
- Audiovisual essays on scientific subjects in cinema
- Science and fiction; Art and science (Bioart, ambiental art)
- Biodiversity
- Linguistic and ethnic diversity
- Science and technology
- Everyday science
- Science and subjectivity
- Exact and Social Sciences: borders and permeability
- Globalization
- Others that involve science and knowledge
All films competing must have been completed as of January 2017;
Films in the non-competition section must have been completed as of January 2012;
Films must have an english subtitled screener, if their main language isn’t english, spanish or portuguese;
Selected films must have an exhibition copy with english subtitles;
The following file formats will be accepted: h264 and Apple ProRes 422 HQ;
International or national premiere of the films isn’t required.
Article 2
(On submission)
The festival submission period runs until January 1st of 2020;
Each filmmaker can only submit one film;
In the case of co-creation of work, at least one of the filmmakers must be properly enrolled in a higher education institution or film/audiovisual school during the film making period;
Submissions are free;
Submissions will be made on the platform FilmFreeway or through the online form, to which the short film preview link, with English subtitles, available on a streaming video hosting web page, such as VIMEO or YouTube, should be attached;
When filling out the form, the documents listed in the following sub-paragraphs must be present:
f.1.) Proof of relationship with the Faculty, University or Higher School of the signing director, at the time of the completion of the work;
f.2.) Upon request, two frames of the audiovisual product in JPG, PNG or TIFF format (minimum 300 dpi resolution) should be sent for disclosure purposes.
f.3.) Submissions with missing documents, incomplete documents, or late registration will not be accepted.
g) By submitting the film, the entrant accepts these rules and authorizes the exhibition of the work at the festival and any activity it promotes, assuming responsibility for all related copyrights of the work.
Article 3
(On selection)
The selection of entries will be made through curators to be defined by the festival organization, which will constitute a selection jury. Jury members may not be involved in any submitted work.
The final result of the selection of works will be sent to the e-mail of the responsible for the registration of each work.
Selected filmmakers should submit a quality copy of the work (preferably in HD) via file transfer platforms such as Wetransfer, Sendspace, Box and iCloud, without file compression, to the festival email : cinenova@fcsh.unl.pt
Exclusivity of selected films is not required and these may be included in the schedule of other festivals. If another festival requires exclusivity, the person responsible for the registration must inform the CINENOVA festival by January 30th to be disregarded. Otherwise, the CINENOVA festival reserves all rights to the screening of the submitted film.
Article 4
(On the prize)
The Jury will be voting for Best Film, which will receive the NOVA FCSH Award (2000€).
The Jury will be voting for Best Portuguese Film in the competition (1000€).
Public and/or private institutions wishing to award special prizes to competing works, based on their own criteria, must first contact the festival organization.
Article 5
(General provisions)
The filmmaker and/or responsible for the registration authorizes the exhibition of the registered work, allows the reproduction of the work for the exhibition on the date of the festival, as well as in activities later scheduled by the event organization. It also authorizes the use of segments of the submitted work for disclosure purposes.
The organization of the festival is not responsible for the copyright of any images, audio, location or soundtrack of each work, which are the sole responsibility of the registered artists.
Entries that do not meet any of the requirements of this regulation will not be selected or they will be disqualified.
All entries, including those not selected, will become part of the festival's collection, and may be included in the festival's schedule and displayed in exhibitions held at other partners' circuits, subject to authorization by the festival's coordination and notification of their respective responsible parties.
Participants of the competition selection may not be collaborators nor be part of the festival team.
Cases not covered in this regulation will be analyzed by the festival organizing committee.
