About the festival

FIRST CROSSINGS
In Search of One's Own Language

https://www.poklonviziji.com/first-crossings

Tribute to a Vision / Poklon viziji / Omaggio a una visione is a cross-border film festival, organized by the cultural association Kinoatelje based in Gorizia, Italy. This year we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the festival, which is taking place in the interregional space between Slovenia and Italy and is trying to connect audiences and film institutions in seven different cities (Gorizia, Nova Gorica, Trieste, Izola, San Pietro al Natisone, Udine and Ljubljana). Every year an award Darko Bratina – which is named after the founder of Kinoatelje, senator, sociologist and cinephil Darko Bratina – is given to an author, who compliments the aesthetic values with a special care for the historical and social environment and is committed to intercultural dialogue.

Because the festival has in the past nineteen years given most of its attention to that one winning author, we wanted to open up to new, fresh ideas. In this year’s edition the organizers have added a new festival section called First Crossings /Prvi poleti /Primi voli, which will be held in Nova Gorica (Slovenia) during the 13th and 15th of October 2019 and is intended for film artists who are just in the beginning of their creative path and are still exploring their film language, but also for those who are in their work already indicating their personal style and authorship.

The main theme of First Crossings is border in the widest sense of the word. We are interested in films that explore the idea of border in it’s formal sense – the border between genres, the restrictions of film, the use of film language that in any way demolishes borders – or in it’s content – political, social, personal or imaginary, symbolic, metaphorical borders. The border between what is real and what is fiction, between natural and artificial also metaphysical, between human and animal, between woman and man – the sky is the limit! We are therefore interested in films that try to cross borders and leave the conventional space of familiarity, films that are daring, bold and youthful, as well as film that reflect the border in any kind of way.

If your film will be accepted to the festival, we will also ask you to write down the connection between the film you submitted and the main theme of the festival: Why do you think your film crosses the border in the sense we described it?
