About the festival

FUTURE ARCHIVES is an ongoing film series in the Washington D.C.-metro area committed to curating exceptional independent and global cinema. Screenings are limited to small groups to encourage deeper participation in before and after discussions over coffee in classic coffeehouse fashion!

Do you have a hidden cinematic gem from 2012? Then you can submit! There is NO limitation on when the film was produced. Selections are based on WHAT the film has to say, not WHEN it was said. Future Archives wants to make films with no or limited distribution (or foreign films without U.S. distribution) accessible to the public after their initial festival run. Feature film submissions are encouraged, but shorts will also be accepted for group screenings.

Films about or produced within the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries that challenge stereotypes and/or educate about these regions are strongly encouraged to apply.

Terms and rules

All films must be in English or with English subtitles where dialogue present. There is no limitation on when films are produced or which genre; however, films can only be submitted for consideration once unless substantially modified. Please include plot synopsis and year of completion with submission.

Filmmaker attendance is encouraged when possible, but not required for consideration. Please specify in your submission if any key crew members are able to attend in person or participate remotely (via Zoom or Skype).

Films will be screened from digital files only - no DVDs or other formats will be used for the programs.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance and screening date will be scheduled at the organizers' discretion within 1-3 months (due to COVID-19, all films will be scheduled after local restrictions are lifted).

Films will be presented via digital files or from DVD/Blu-ray. Films produced after 2005 MUST BE available for presentation in a high-definition 720p format. If you are unable or unwilling to provide us your film as a digital file for exhibition, please DO NOT SUBMIT your film.

Films must be the original work of the applicants. If a film is based upon another person’s life or upon a book or other underlying work, applicant(s) must secure any necessary rights to make such adaptations. However, it is not necessary to submit the adaptation rights agreements. Neither the film series nor its organizers investigate or certifies to the authenticity of an applicant’s statement of authorship or rights secured. Upon submitting, you certify that you have secured all necessary rights and/or, for documentaries, comply with accepted fair use guidelines of any copyright material.

Applicants are solely responsible for obtaining all necessary rights and permissions for third-party materials included in their films, including but not limited to music, trademarks, logos, copyrights, and other intellectual property rights. Future Archives does not accept liability or responsibility for any violations.

Eastern European cinema is under-appreciated, as well as western cinema is full of cliches about the region. We strongly encourage films from these regions, or about these regions, to be submitted.
