About the festival

July 20th update announcement: At Hellifax Horror Fest, we've been assessing the changes to rules around physical gatherings to determine how to best host the short film festival this fall. At this time it's unlikely that a packed theatre of wild, rabid horror fans will be allowed - so we're moving the festival online. The online screenings will be held during a weekend in October - the exact date(s) will be announced in September. We do hold out hope that we can hold a screening or event in-person. If it's possible, we'll make it happen.

Our goals for the fest remain the same... we want to show the best horror shorts from amazing filmmakers from around the world, and to help build the horror community in Halifax. So far we've received over 30 hours of short films from 26 countries! Submissions are still open until September 5th.

We're thrilled with the support received so far for the fest, and we can't wait to show what we've got in store. Thank you.

*****************************************

We want to screen your best indie horror short films! Send us your slashers, monster movies, supernatural, zombie, psychological, found-footage, horror-comedy and everything in-between.

Hellifax Horror Fest is a first-year festival dedicated to short films, in the seaside city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Therein lives a contingent of die-hard horror fans with a taste for blood (in film, that is). This festival has been created for those fans, and for the filmmakers who deliver innovative and compelling stories.

We're filmmakers ourselves, and we're doing this for the love of the horror genre. We aim to showcase the next generation of horror filmmakers to a warped and wonderful audience.

April 14th update: We didn't plan to receive submissions of unproduced scripts for horror short films, but we have. So we've decided - why not? We're ready for your scripts in the horror genre (with a maximum length of 25 pages.)

We'll rank the scripts and the top three will receive an award laurel graphic and a FilmFreeway waiver for their next submission to the Hellifax Horror Fest.

Hellifax Horror Fest is committed to recognizing filmmakers in a number of categories, including:

Audience Favorite Film (audience vote)
Audience Favorite Film - Runner Up (audience vote)

Juried Awards:
Best Film
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Script
Best Cinematography
Best Score
Best Editing
Best Practical Effects
Best Visual Effects

Best Monster/Villain

Every winner will receive an award laurel graphic and a FilmFreeway waiver for their next submission to the Hellifax Horror Fest.
