About the festival

The International Puppet Underground Festival combines the universally compelling primordial magic of puppets with contemporary performance and postmodern multimedia. The raw uncanniness, bizarre comedy, and unexpected beauty of hand-made and operated puppets creates a sense of magic, sweeping us into otherwise untold stories and otherwise unrealized worlds. IPUF: a film festival, a puppet festival, an escape from daily life.
In addition to screening Saskatchewan and international live-action puppet films, IPUF presents free puppet workshops and a puppet exhibition and showcases live puppet performances for a variety of audiences, from Kid’s Day to the adults-only, late-night PuppetSLAM Cabaret.

IPUF does its best to pay artists. All selected and screened work will be paid an honourarium of at least $50 (CAD).

Terms and rules

IPUF only screens live-action puppet films.
To expand on this, live-action means puppets manipulated live while the camera rolls, so this means IPUF shows films that are NOT animation (not stop motion, not claymation, not CGI), nor just recordings of puppet performances (such as a documented theatre show). The focus of the festival is to showcase visionary puppetry art and the skill of the puppeteer, so films that feature puppets to a great extent will be given preference. Music videos which happen to have puppets in them are not necessarily what the jury is looking for, but because there are so many interpretations to consider music videos are not automatically disqualified.

All decisions of the jury are final. Saskatchewan filmmakers can submit for free, write us at festival@ipuf.ca for the password for this category.

All submissions must include:
- a short synopsis
- an image still from the film
- a short bio of the filmmaker
- a screening quality video file or downloadable link
- a trailer if possible

Eligibility
• Jury preference will be given to independent productions that reflect the IPUF's mandate. The term “Independent” is defined as a film in which the filmmaker retains 100% creative control.
• Films must be under 15 minutes. If your film is longer, but you believe it to be succinct and good enough for the jury to consider, please write us to discuss the possibility.
• Films must not have been screened at previous IPUF Screenings. Contact us for exceptions.

By submitting, the filmmaker warrants that they are the rightful owner of the submission and do not violate or infringe on any trademark, trade name, copyright, literary, dramatic, musical, artistic or other intellectual property or personal rights.

Only entrants whose films have been selected for screenings will be notified.

By submitting your film, you agree to allow the IPUF and its Affiliates to screen your film as well as use your footage and stills in promotional material for the IPUF screening.

All submitted films will be also considered for the future "best of" events.

Passworded/private streaming video links preferred for submissions (such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc)

Adjudication
This is a competitive process juried by a panel of independent filmmakers under the IPUF policy. Films selected for the IPUF Screening will be assessed under the context of the IPUF’s mandate.
The IPUF retains the right to deem certain content inappropriate for a general audience.
The final decision regarding interpretation of the eligibility of any production for consideration for IPUF will be the responsibility of the IPUF.
