About the festival

MUICA is a biennale event taking place in several Colombian cities. Its film selection features a wide variety of stories and genres, from thriller to documentary, historical drama and science fiction. MUICA highlights the rich landscape of the film industry in Africa, opening a window into the audio-visual narratives of a vast and diverse
cultural landscape. Additional activities aim to foster dialogue and understanding of the
complex realities of African nations, challenging stereotypes and strengthening the cultural links amongst countries of the Global South.

La Muestra Itinerante de Cine Africano - MUICA - es un evento bienal dirigido al público de diferentes ciudades en Colombia. Presenta una selección de películas africanas y sobre la africanidad, que recorren desde el thriller al documental, el drama histórico y la ciencia ficción. La selección busca desafiar y nutrir el imaginario sobre el continente africano y a resaltar la versatilidad creativa de sus realizadores audiovisuales, protagonistas de una escena cultural vasta y diversa. Sus actividades adicionales buscan alimentar el diálogo y la comprensión de las complejas realidad de las naciones africanas, desafiando los estereotipos y fortaleciendo los vínculos entre estas regiones del Sur Global.

Terms and rules

• The selection represents various regions of the continent and reflects geographic and linguistic diversity.
• The selection reflects thematic diversity and includes different cinematographic genres.
• The selection highlights the work of young filmmakers and emerging talents on the continent.
• The selection also includes established filmmakers and classic African films.
• The selection considers the production quality of the film, as well as the quality of the copy. The highest audiovisual quality is essential in the screenings.
• The selection seeks gender equality in the film production teams.
• The program includes at least one title that addresses topics related to other cultural expressions such as music, dance, fine arts, photography, etc.
• The programming will take into account the relevance of the subject in the current context. Thus, it can include titles according to topics relevant to the public (migration, gender equality or violence, decolonization processes, etc).
• The selection will also consider titles not subtitled in Spanish.
• The selected titles are divided in three sections: Made in Africa for African productions, Otras miradas (Other views) for African-Western co-productions, and Diaspora for films related to African heritage in other parts of the world.
