About the festival

The New Jersey Young Filmmakers’ Festival (NJYFF) is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium. The mission of NJYFF is to support and promote the work of young emerging filmmakers, who either live in or attend school in the State of New Jersey. NJYFF gives students the opportunity to submit their films to a highly respected and long-running film festival and have it evaluated by prominent representatives in the field of film and media. Since the very beginning of New Jersey Young Filmmakers in 1975, the purpose of the festival has been to recognize, celebrate, and encourage emerging young talent in New Jersey, the state in which Thomas Edison first developed the motion picture.

Every year the Festival premiere, reception, and awards ceremony is held in late May or early June at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange, NJ - the original home of Thomas Edison's first film studio known as the "Black Maria."

The award-winning films are screened on a Saturday evening under the stars, awards are presented, a party with refreshments for filmmakers, family, and friends is held, photos of filmmakers are taken and a video is produced every year at the event and posted on the NJYFF website. Activities include a film trivia game, raffle, and more. Admission is free and open to the public.

Prizes include:
NJYFF T-Shirts - with a new logo every year designed by a winning young NJ artist.
NJYFF Buttons for all filmmakers attending the premiere with the winning logo design.
NJYFF Plaques commemorating the top-award winners.
Complementary photos for all winning filmmakers with their family and friends.
