Categories and fees

North West Filmmakers
Early Bird (2nd August, 2020) $10
Regular (1st January, 2021) $15
Late (1st May, 2021) $20

"To be a filmmaker, you have to lead. You have to be psychotic in your desire to do something. People always like the easy route. You have to push very hard to get something unusual, something different.” - Danny Boyle. The North-West has always been at the forefront of British cultural expression and creativity. This open genre category is designed to celebrate the talent and diversity on offer around the region, promoting both new and established filmmakers far and wide.

Drama
Early Bird (2nd August, 2020) $10
Regular (1st January, 2021) $15
Late (1st May, 2021) $20

“Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.” – Alfred Hitchcock. Film dramas connect with us as they share emotions, ideas and philosophies from around the world. All different in their own way and yet all telling us so much about the human condition. Profound, intense, passionate, tragic, uplifting... and so much more!

Horror
Early Bird (2nd August, 2020) $10
Regular (1st January, 2021) $15
Late (1st May, 2021) $20

HORROR “In England, I’m a horror movie director. In Germany, I’m a filmmaker. In the US, I’m a bum.” – John Carpenter. Horror is a mirror to our darker, creepier sides, where shrieks and screams are the soundtrack to this twisted genre. Triggering visceral responses by unlocking our private fears, yet giving a vicarious pleasure in the sheer primal release we experience when watching truly great horror!

Family
Early Bird (2nd August, 2020) $10
Regular (1st January, 2021) $15
Late (1st May, 2021) $20

Comedy
Early Bird (2nd August, 2020) $10
Regular (1st January, 2021) $15
Late (1st May, 2021) $20

COMEDY “All I need to make a comedy is a park, a policeman and a pretty girl.” – Charlie Chaplin. Wise words from an obvious master, but comedy can be so much more. It can mix with any genre, but always with the intent to put a smile on our lips, or a laugh in our bellies. And laughter is one of the great universalities in the world. Comedy films can transcend cultural barriers like no other, leaving the viewer, if only fleetingly, in a better place.

Documentary
Early Bird (2nd August, 2020) $10
Regular (1st January, 2021) $15
Late (1st May, 2021) $20

DOCUMENTARY “We realized that the important thing was not the film itself but that which the film provoked.” — Fernando Solanas. Telling stories that don't have the freedom of fiction. Documentaries have the ability to educate, inform, challenge and provoke the viewer. From tiny moments in nature or humanity to challenging world events, documentary films are forever providing us reasons to think just that little bit harder about the world we live in.

Animation
Early Bird (2nd August, 2020) $10
Regular (1st January, 2021) $15
Late (1st May, 2021) $20

ANIMATION “When animators weren't sleeping, they were drinking.” - Joseph Barbera. Animation can really stretch the imagination. Independent animation takes the viewer on journeys of creativity and visual freedom, unhampered by reality. Whether the stories are sad, uplifting, challenging or touching, they are always unique in their presentation and make us all look at the world with wider eyes.
