STRANGELOVE TIME-BASED MEDIA FESTIVAL
STOP | LOOK | LISTEN | WALK
Festivals are foremost about people gathering, talking, networking and exchanging ideas as a celebration of energy, enthusiasm, and connection. Despite the postponement of the physical festival, the Strangelove team still want festival-goers to feel a sense of wonder & enjoyment within this downtime. To do this, we feel it imperative to continue facilitating opportunity which challenges, and allows people to be able to present and engage with what the festival has to offer not only as an event, but as a long-standing hub of access to time-based media. Strangelove Festival celebrates the diversity of time-based media, from artist videos, experimental film and conventional cinema; to sound and performance works. We want to explore the potential of live connections with internet audiences, by proposing both a task and open platform for all to digest through individual thought, time and interpretation in sync with how each one of us is experiencing the world. In response to the world wide pandemic of COVID 19, Strangelove has taken on an exploration of digital counterparts. Our brand new festival programme launches digitally June 1st - July 5th 2020, with a build-up of weekly screenings and features commencing this May. We have a number of LIVE open-calls and interactive rooms for festival goers to read, write, think and engage on our website.
Selected submissions will be promoted through social media, showcased in the online festival programme, with a special website feature. We may be selecting work to be included in the June/July programme as we go along (1st June – 5th July), but most work will be shown throughout August within our special open-call season. When the physical festival is able to happen, submitted work will also be featured then. There will be a greater and expanded programme developing over the coming months, so please sign up to our newsletter for updates and/or check the website.
This year's edition will present works by many influential artists and filmmakers including the world-famous Quay Brothers, who will be showing a new live performance work of their film Ghosts and Whispers scheduled now for 2021. Jocelyn Pook who has written film scores for directors including for Kubrick and Scorsese will be delivering a talk about her work and will be showing an experimental video installation piece in collaboration with Dragan Aleksic.
Our new partners Animate Projects, Violet Pictures and Videoclub will be curating a screening of contemporary animation and British Animator Paul Bush will be showcasing his recent projects. The festival will also celebrate films by Derek Jarman, the British artist and filmmaker, plus much more.
