ALL SUBMISSIONS WILL RECEIVE SCORE CARDS AND JUDGE’S NOTES!
(See rules and terms for details.)

The Magic of Horror celebrates all kinds of films, screenplays, and art in the horror genre. Creepy creatures, psychological thrillers, gothic tales, supernatural terrors, or even good old-fashioned slashers, we think they all have the magic to scare the pants off of genre fans!

Selected films and trailers will be competing against each other with live screenings at our event at the historic Firehouse Theatre in Richmond, Virginia. Attending filmmakers will be invited to participate in a Q&A session at the end of their film, trailer, or music video's screening block.

Movie posters, horror artwork, and specialty contest photographs will also be viewed by the audience in-between film blocks.

For writers, we have screenplay competitions. Finalists will be invited to participate in our “Script Talk” session at the festival to tell the audience about their work.

The event ends with the awards ceremony and we have a lot of awards to hand out, including some Audience Choice Awards voted on by the festival attendees.

We have a few new contests this year to celebrate horror-themed artwork, makeup, and costumes!

SHORT FILM COMPETITION – Films up to 45 minutes in length.

MOVIE TRAILER COMPETITION – Trailers for either short or feature films.

SHORT SCREENPLAY COMPETITION – Scripts up to 40 pages long.

FEATURE SCREENPLAY COMPETITION – Scripts between 41-120 pages long.

LOGLINE CONTEST – We know how important a logline is for marketing a film or script! Submissions in this category are judged on their ability to grab attention.

SCRIPT FIRST 10 PAGES CONTEST – The all-important opening scenes of a screenplay are judged on how well they capture the reader’s attention and leave them wanting more.

MOVIE POSTER CONTEST – Promotional posters for both films and screenplays.

MUSIC VIDEO COMPETITION – Horror-themed music videos under 3 minutes long.

HORROR ART CONTEST – Including paintings, drawings, and photographs of sculptures or other 3-dimensional mediums. Must be original work, not “fan art”.

FX MAKEUP CONTEST – Photograph of original makeup creations.

ORIGINAL COSTUME CONTEST – Full-length photograph of original creations. Must be completed costumes, not concept sketches. Costumes must be at least 80% hand-made/fabricated by the submitter.

All submitted projects receive the scorecards and notes given by the judges regardless of if the project is accepted into the festival or not. Scorecards are sent to the submitter at the end of the judging period. Withdrawing a submission cancels this perk.

AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARDS:
At the live event our audiences get to vote for their favorite films and trailers and the winner is announced at the awards ceremony.

The winners of Audience Choice awards receive trophies.

Because our trophies are each engraved with the title of the winning project, Audience Choice winners will not receive their actual trophy on the night of the event. (We'll let the winners use a blank trophy so they won't be left out of the red carpet photos!) The real trophies will be created and mailed out a few weeks later.

Submissions that do not follow the rules will be disqualified, so please ask any questions before submitting.

Multiple submissions are accepted, but each must be submitted with a separate fee. There are no discounts for multiple submissions.

Understand that the submission fee does not guarantee your project a place in the festival. Entries are judged by a panel who make the decisions of Official Selections, Finalists, and Jury Prize winners. The judges decisions are final and may not be disputed.

All entries must be sent via FilmFreeway. Please do not send DVDs, BluRays, images, photographs, or any downloadable files to us directly.

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim made by you or any third party due to or arising out of project(s) you submit to this contest. You understand that there are thousands of film-makers, writers and other artists and the similarities in story, characters, design, etc... of two or more submissions are certainly a possibility. The contest directors and judges will not knowingly share your submission with any third party.

IF SELECTED FOR THE FESTIVAL:

All Official Selections understand and accept that if their submission is accepted for presentation and/or screening at the live festival, they grant full and unrestricted permission for Rogue Chimera Films LLC / Magic of Horror (MOH). to screen or show their entry project at times of the festival’s choice and understand that the festival will charge an admission fee for the general public.

The Submitter understands and accepts that they do not participate in receiving any funds from the ticket sales to the festival, which are fully retained by the event organizers to help cover the overall cost of the festival presentation.

Official selections are entitled to two free passes to the screening block that their entry is scheduled to appear in. Finalists will also receive two free passes for the Awards Ceremony. Because the venue has limited seating capacity, Official Selections must reserve (RSVP) at least three weeks before the festival date to receive two complimentary tickets to their screening block. Those who do not RSVP in time will forfeit their complimentary tickets and there will be no guarantee that tickets will be available for purchase.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at the end of the festival. Award-winners who are unable to attend the festival will have their awards mailed to them.
Selected film-makers may be asked to submit an additional digital screening copy of their film, trailer, or video along with any promotional materials they have available such as film poster, trailer, still photos, film-maker biographies, etc... The Filmmaker grants MOH the right to use any and all promotional materials in any manner they see fit for publicity purposes related to the festival. All requested materials must be received by the festival no later than October 25, 2021 to be included in the event.

We keep all entries as secure as possible prior to and during the festival. (Digital files are erased after the festival is concluded.) However, with the popularity of camera devices (cell phones), we cannot promise the security of content shown at the festival. The Submitter releases MOH and its organizers from any and all liability whatsoever for theft, copyright violations, or piracy of the entry.

The Submitter accepts and understands that the festival, in conjunction with the Firehouse Theatre, will do everything possible to present the films and still images in the best possible manner but the festival is not responsible for any and all malfunctions or technical difficulties during the presentation of any film or photograph at its festival screening.

The Magic of Horror festival reserves the right to make changes in the screening date and times and to possibly not screen a film regardless of its being selected for screening.
