About the festival

Kortfilmfestivalen / The Norwegian Short Film Festival is a short film festival with a competition programme for Norwegian and international short film, short documentaries and Norwegian music videos.
We are an important platform for both debuting and more established filmmakers, perhaps the most important showcase for free and independent films in Norway. The competition programme for international short films attracts industry people from all over the world to Grimstad, and the festival facilitates panels, discussions, and networking opportunities connecting Norwegian and international film professionals. .

International Short films are eligible for the two following awards:

- THE GOLDEN CHAIR for Best International Short Film is awarded 50 000 NOK.
- THE GOLDEN CHAIR for Best Documentary Short Film is awarded 50 000 NOK.

Norwegian Short Films are eligible for the following awards:

- THE GOLDEN CHAIR for Best Norwegian Short Film is awarded 50 000 NOK presented by Aust-Agder Municipality, as well as post production on a film worth 50.000 kroner given by Shortcut Oslo. The winner is qualified to be considered for an Academy Award.

- THE GOLDEN CHAIR for Best Documentary Short Film is awarded 50 000 NOK.

- THE GOLDEN CHAIR for Best Music Video is awarded 25 000 NOK presented by HQartist, a collaboration tool for the live music industry.

- THE TERJE VIGEN AWARD consists of a bronze statuette made by artist Harald Oredam and 10 000 NOK, and is presented by the Municipality of Grimstad to a Norwegian short film.

- THE AUDIENCE AWARD is awarded 25 000 NOK presented by Altibox, in addition to marketing and distribution of the award-winning film on Altibox’ streaming service. 
The award is given to a Norwegian short film in competition.

- THE SPARK AWARD-winning film is awarded 25 000 NOK presented by Altibox, in addition to marketing and distribution of the award-winning film on Altibox’ streaming service. 
The award is given to a Norwegian filmmaker in competition who exhibits a particular boldness and creative talent.

- The Norwegian Film Workers Association’s TECHNICAL AWARD of 10 000 NOK is given to the individual demonstrating the best professional contribution to a Norwegian film in competition.

- THE HOURGLASS AWARD comprises of 15 000 NOK and is presented by the Writer’s Guild of Norway to the creators of the best short fiction script in the Norwegian short film competition.

- THE PRODUCER AWARD consists of 10 000 NOK and career counselling, and is presented by Storm Films. The award is given to the best producer in the Norwegian short film competition.

- The Norwegian FILM CRITIC'S AWARD is given to a Norwegian short film in competition.

- The Aust-Agder County’s YOUTH AWARD is presented by a student jury from the Dahlske Upper Secondary School in Grimstad. The Award is given to a film in the International Short Film Programme. The award is 5 000 NOK.

Terms and rules

Only completed films will be eligible for selection. Works in progress or unfinished films will not be considered. FILMS MUST BE COMPLETED AFTER 15th FEBRUARY 2019.

Short Fiction Films must be 35 min or less.
Short Documentary Films must be 40 min or less.

Deadline for submission is 15th of February 2021.

A pre-selection committee for each category, appointed by the festival, will evaluate the films and make the final selection. We are not able to give feedback on films or reasons for the committee’s decisions.

Before you submit, please make sure you have all the information, credits and technical specifications on your film's page. If selected, this is the information and images we will use online and in the program.

If selected for competition we require a projection copy or file for the cinema in Grimstad, Norway. This must be delivered or transferred by April 17th. Standard format is DCP, but we accept other formats to convert. Selection notifications will be sent all filmmakers in the beginning of April 2021.

Submission fee for International Films is NOK 150
Submission fee for Norwegian Films is NOK 250.
