1. Definition and purpose
The Poitiers Film Festival (27 November - 4 December, 2020) is organized by the TAP. It aims to promote the works of creators from film schools, universities, or picture trades training institutes worldwide. To do so, the festival schedules films chosen by a selection committee and the programming team. All registered films compete in the International Selection. Films under 60 minutes compete in the Short Films section. From 60 minutes, the films compete in the Feature Films section. French films under 20 minutes also compete in the So French! competitive programme. Films that are suitable for a young audience may be selected for the Piou-Piou program, in which case broadcasting rights will be paid.
2. Eligibility conditions
All films submitted must have been shot in the context of a cinematographic or audiovisual training. For the Feature section, the first films by filmmakers that were previously selected by the Poitiers Film Festival are also eligible. Eligibility: - films completed since 1st January 2019 that were not previously submitted to the festival - films of any running time and genre - films without subtitles if the original language is French or English / with French or English subtitles for all other original languages. Several films may be submitted. Participation is free. No items will be returned. An acknowledgement email will be addressed to the sender. After receiving confirmation of their selection at the festival, the rights holders undertake to not withdraw their films from the Selection.
3. Selection
Application form must be filled online on the festival’s website no later than 1st July 2020. If the film can’t be watched online, it may be sent by post on DVD or USB stick. It must be received before the application date of closure. To avoid customs clearance problems, please specify on the outside of the package “Festival Films – No commercial value”, and for the customs declaration a maximum value of 10€. Results will be communicated by email to the candidates on 1st October 2020.
4. Print traffic
Procedures for forwarding the screening copies of the selected films will be specified to the persons concerned once the selection has been made. Festival requests a high-quality video file of the film. This file may be converted into DCP by the festival. The festival accepts DCP (without KDM encryption key). The sent DCP must be extracted from the same master as the video file. Film copies will be uploaded on the FTP server of the festival or sent by post. They must reach the festival office before 15 October 2020. Only those in perfect screening condition will be accepted. Sending films: sending arrangements will be the sender’s responsibility. Customs duties will be the responsibility of the festival. Film return: arranging the return of the films will be the responsibility of the festival. Films will be sent back within a month after the end of the festival. Customs duties will be the responsibility of the addressee. Films may also be delivered in person to their owners at the end of the festival.
5. Invitation
Directors of the selected films will be invited to Poitiers during the festival. Transportation, accommodation and meal conditions will be communicated to each participant when his or her selection is announced. Guests will be called upon to participate in professional meetings, in discussions with the audience, and possibly with school groups and journalists.
6. Subtitling
The selected films will be screened in their original language version, with electronic French subtitles. Translations done for electronic subtitling remain the property of the subtitling company.
7. Juries and prizes
Approximately twenty prizes (monetary and resource-oriented) will be awarded by independent juries and by festival-goers. Winners will be announced at the International Selection’s closing ceremony and after the screening for the So French! program. The complete list of prizes will be announced on the website on 15 October 2020. Eligible participants undertake to mention the full title of the prize on all advertising and promotional material.
8. Film market
Upon authorisation of the rights owners, the selected films will be uploaded to the online market platform of the festival, only accessible to industry professionals and members of the press.
9. Media-Communication
Rights owners of the selected films grant to the festival, with no compensation in return, the right to reproduce photographs and to use clips (up to 15% of the total length of the film) of their films for promotional purposes in festival publications, the press, on television, on social networks and on the website www.poitiersfilmfestival.com.
10. Initiatives after the festival
Reruns of the award-winning films may take place within 60 days following the prize-giving ceremony. Any selected film may be used as a teaching aid in partner schools. These initiatives are for cultural and non-commercial purposes.
11. Insurances
The festival insures the film prints from the day when the films are delivered by carriers to the day when these films are given to the carriers for return shipment. In the event of damage, the insurance company will systematically appoint an expert as regards cinematography and the responsibility of the festival will not be bound except for the film print replacement value, calculated on the basis of net prices at the rates applied in the original country.
