About the festival

**What is Popcorn Roulette?**

Popcorn Roulette began two years ago as a movie review show. I wanted to share movies with my audience and the community, with the presumption that all movies could be fun and evocative in their own way.

To promote the show, I began hosting monthly movie nights in downtown Haverhill. It's been a blast. But I want to share more than industry staples. So we're starting a film festival!

**What makes the Popcorn Roulette Film Festival Special?**

Popcorn Roulette works closely with HC Media, a multiple award winning public media outlet. This year alone, HC Media won first place in the 'Mixed and Transmedia' category and first place in the 'Experimental' category in the National Alliance for Community Media Awards.

I don't want to make promises about the level of coverage we can expect, because this is our first film festival, and much of this depends on my ability to wrangle interns and volunteers. But some of the things I want to do is:

- Film the festival proceedings for broadcast.
- Film some interviews for broadcast, along with any trailers or clips directors might provide.
- Broadcast trailers to help promote the festival.
- Invite some festival participants to be a guest on the Popcorn Roulette show to talk about their favorite movie.
- Toss together a number of Skype interviews with participants who are unable to make the trip to Haverhill.

All of this makes for great promotional material in its own right, as well as providing clips and b-roll for your sizzle reel.

**Where is Haverhill?**

Haverhill, is the Queen Slipper City and the inspiration for Archie Comics. We're 40 minutes north of Boston, MA, 40 minutes south of Manchester, NH, and a stop on the Amtrak line. Haverhill is an old mill city on the Merrimack River that blends rural and urban life, with a vibrant artist community, and an excellent selection of restaurants and ale houses. It's a beautiful place to screen a movie.

Terms and rules

We want a great variety of style and genre. That said, Haverhill has had two other film festivals. One with a focus on experimental films, and one with a focus on horror. We don't want to tread in their space. So...

No experimental films. We want stories with narrative and a plot. Abstract and open-ended plots are still welcome. Documentaries, even documentaries without a clear structure, are welcome.

No obvious horror. Thriller and suspense are welcome.

Short films only. Maximum length: 39 minutes.

English, or subtitled in English only.
