TCI is an independent festival aiming to showcase contemporary dance on screen works from around the world. As digital technology has made filmmaking means increasingly more accessible to independent producers, so has the genre of the dance film exploded in popularity and variety. New ways to capture, edit and process the movement of the body are being constantly developed in increasingly imaginative ways, through the collaboration not only of cinematographers, choreographers, and dancers, but also visual artists and animators, composers and writers. TCI aims to present novel approaches to how the ever-evolving cinematic medium can use dance, or, equivalently, how contemporary choreographers and performers can use image capture, to further the discourse of this artistic crossover.
Screenings take place at Vitruvian Thing, the acclaimed performing arts centre, situated in downtown Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, European cultural capital on 1997, and youth capital on 2014. With a metropolitan area population in excess of one million, the city has a rich artistic, multicultural history that resonates to this day.
TCI, in its fourth year, is run by Die Wolke art group, a non-profit company for the performing arts and technologies. There is no thematic restriction, though the festival actively seeks works made in an imaginative manner and is particularly interested in works that defy genre and crossover in narrative or experimental territory.
The festival also aims to arrange short artist talks and Q&A sessions with directors and choreographers, as well as coordinate with local dance groups and schools, organise workshops, and more. In 2020, as a result of CoViD-related restrictions, the festival took place with limited audience, but also had an online, on-demand presence. For 2021, a similar, mixed format is expected.

CoViD-19 update: The pandemic situation has disrupted virtually all events worldwide, festivals or otherwise. We are taking measures to ensure that the festival will indeed be held, conforming to any requirements regarding attendance; for example, if we are required to reduce the seating, we can increase the number of screenings based on ticket demand. We will also introduce a modern, well-organised online segment, including on-demand and/or live streaming. While we wait the virus out, we are building on the likely limitations to ensure the best TCI yet.
