UGFF is a festival showcasing independent films and filmmakers from around the world. An underground film is a film that is out of the mainstream either in its style, genre, or financing. The first use of the term "underground film", in the late 50s, was created to refer to the work of directors who "played an anti-art role in Hollywood". The term developed as a metaphorical reference to a clandestine and subversive culture beneath the legitimate and official media.

Con il termine "Underground" ci si riferisce ad uno stile cinematografico le cui modalità produttive, esecutive e distributive sono condotte seguendo canali differenti da quelli del cinema dominante. Fu Marcel Duchamp, nel 1961, a dichiarare che l'Arte dovesse diventare sotterranea ("will go underground"), indicando la via per l'utilizzo del termine "cinema underground", come metafora di una cultura sovversiva e clandestina, in opposizione con i media ufficiali e legittimati.
